The Nancy Sever Gallery is pleased to present Jamie Boyd | The River and the Olive Grove, an exhibition of recent work by one of Australia’s leading landscape artists.
Jamie Boyd, son of the great Australian artist Arthur Boyd, was born in Melbourne in 1948 and moved to England with his family as a young boy. At the age of 17 he began painting full-time in London and trained at the Central School of Art and Design.
He held his first Australian exhibition in 1966 at the Bonython Galleries in Adelaide. Since then he has exhibited regularly in Australia and throughout Europe, including in Amsterdam, Florence, Ipswich (UK) and London.
Jamie Boyd displays a vigorous, instinctive response to landscape. He is an acknowledged master-colourist and his paintings often have a lyrical dream-like quality that matches the sensitive attention he gives to surface textures.
The artist has written of his work: “The longer I have been painting the more it seems to me that the brush stroke itself is the key to imbuing a picture with life - the meeting point where the painter and the surface to be painted collide. This notion has been expressed before and I think it applies especially to on-the-spot (plein air) painting where the landscape takes possession of the painter’s spirit just as the painter steals from the forms of the land”.
