Artist's statement

As much as the mind links an idea with a design solution, the hand connects design to the making process. Making becomes the extension of design and forms the essence of craft. New technologies play an ever increasing part in my working practice. The skilful manipulation of tools and process - the basis of making - is equally important for digital work and requires an experienced hand. These augment and expand all aspects from the sketching to the making, digital technologies have a hand in it. Using traditional silversmithing techniques together with digital fabrication calls for new design solutions and informs the resulting object. The resulting objects are one-off finished objects or prototypes to be produced in small scale manufacture. The pleasure is in the making, wherever and however it happens.


His current research project explores the relationship between the applied, decorative and sculptural object. The project links new materials and processes to his studio based practice as a designer/maker. He experiments with computer controlled (CNC) routing of flat material to form 3D objects in which high performing composite sheeting is used as the base material. He researches the design of CNC cutting patterns and translates these into digital files which, in turn, control the CNC router's path. Of special interest is the effect of the machine cut pattern as it guides the manual shaping of the sheet into a 3D object. The surface treatment is important as the appearance of the finished object will convert this material from its industrial appearance to the manually formed and finished object.
